How Well Do You Know Wendy Newcomer?

How well do you know 50 Shades Of Hay? We're spotlighting a different band member every week. This week's profile is Wendy Newcomer. Come to The Nashville Palace today -- Sunday, Dec. 4 from 4:30-8pm -- but please do not give her lemonade before our show (vodka is preferred). Here are a few things you may not know about Wendy:

• Memorable gig: I was in a family band back in NC called Steel Country. We once opened for Johnny Paycheck at a Durham biker bar. The owner asked to see our set list before we started. He said there were certain songs (Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" among them) we shouldn't play because it would anger the patrons. We definitely did not want to anger them.

• Musical Heroes: Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Patty Loveless, Karen Carpenter, Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Randy Travis. And so many more.

• Most embarrassing moment onstage: In 2008 my song "Runaround" was a country category finalist in the MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. I was so nervous, I couldn't eat anything all morning. Backstage, there was lemonade. I nervously drank so much of it, my blood sugar level spiked – and crashed while I was onstage in the middle of the song. As my ears started ringing and the tunnel vision began, I clutched the mic stand and made it through – and by some miracle, my song even won. But it was definitely not my best performance. The winners sang on the cabin stage that evening. My guitarist (the talented singer/songwriter John Griffin) warned me if I fainted that night, he would step right over my limp body and sing one of his own songs. What a guy. :)

• Phobias: I am a bit claustrophobic. And whenever possible, I avoid moths (those erratic flight patterns!).

• Pet Peeves: People who say, "I probably shouldn't be asking you this, but ..." Also, "whiskers" on jeans. No woman has ever said, "These jeans would be perfect if they only had horizontal stripes across the hips."

• "Pinch Me" Moments: Thanks to my other life as a writer, I've had some surreal experiences, including: Going on the road with Waylon Jennings, with him holding court at the front of the bus, telling story after glorious story. Being invited into his home at the end of the trek. Jumping on a trampoline with Tanya Tucker's kids on the third floor of her house, while waiting to interview her. A Cracker Barrel breakfast with Vern Gosdin. Interviewing Patty Loveless at my house (which I cleaned for days prior to her arrival). Spending the day with Loretta Lynn. Just before the photographer snapped a photo of us, she said, "Here honey, have some of my dress," draping it over my jeans. I love her so much.

• A non-musical talent/skill/hobby/interest: I am learning to sew. I'm at the "sewing on a button/making a pillowcase" stage. Don't worry, my fellow band mates, I won't be asking you to wear my creations any time soon!
